The SS Ayrfield is one of many decommissioned ships in the Homebush Bay, just west of Sydney, but what separates it from the other stranded vessels is the incredible foliage that adorns the rusted hull. The beautiful spectacle, also referred to as The Floating Forest, adds a bit of life to the area, which happens to be a sort of ship graveyard.

Have to add my two cents to the conversation in the Star Trek tag over Benedict’s character. If you don’t want spoilers, I’ve put it all under a cut. If you’ve seen the movie and care to know my mostly unqualified opinion, please feel free to check it out!

Sometimes the race/gender theory student in me rears her ugly head and I just have to get some things off my chest…

First off, let me say that I think it’s great that people are taking this opportunity to talk about the very real problem of cultural whitewashing in Hollywood and the paucity of characters/actors of color in major motion pictures. I understand and respect the very eloquent arguments against Cumberbatch’s portrayal.

Personally, I respectfully disagree that Star Trek is an example of this problem, though I will freely admit that the situation is problematic. And here’s a ~~ridiculously long-winded~~ explanation of my reasoning:

The concept of “race” is a difficult social construct to define. Race is more than just skin color - it’s a collection of cultural identifiers that are associated with a perceived similarity in physical appearance. It’s a community, a shared culture, a group where one can belong. According to some theories, then, the problem of “whitewashing” comes less from erasing the representation of an actual, physical color and more from erasing the representation of the ethnicity, the culture, that a person’s race signifies. It’s the problem of perpetuating white power and privilege - of assuming that the experience of the white person - usually the white man - represents us all, and ignoring the true diversity of experience in the world we live in (and the oppression and persecution that is perpetrated because of that ignorance).

I don’t see that happening here. For a couple of reasons. First, Khan’s “race” is never firmly identified in original canon. In early versions of the script, Khan was Nordic. In a one-line description from the season 1 episode “Space Seed,” Marla, the ship’s historian, “guesses” he’s from North India, “probably a Sikh” (but it’s never confirmed). Even then, he’s not played by an Indian actor, but by Ricardo Montalbán, a Latino man.

The other members of Khan’s crew are described by Scotty as “mixed types, Western, mid-European, Latin, Oriental.” Khan’s “physical” race - or even his *probable* “cultural” race of Indian - is not as important to his character as his membership in this “mixed” race of genetically engineered superhumans. Nothing in Khan’s backstory clearly indicates that he mustbe a person of color, though he was played by an actor of color, nor is it clear which race his character should be according to the original canonical portrayals. The character’s story, then, is still perfectly preserved in Cumberbatch’s portrayal and in Orci, Kurtzman, and Lindelof’s script.

All of that doesn’t mean that this isn’t whitewashing, of course, if Abrams’ cast were yet another cavalcade of white-bread American and Western European supermodels. And while there are admittedly a few of these types in Into Darkness, the main and supporting cast is still diverse. Sulu and Uhura are arguably two of the most important characters in the movie, and the bridge and Enterprise crew represents not just characters from many Federation planets, but many different races and cultures as well.

I won’t say it’s not problematic, and it definitely raises important questions that we should consider. Could Khan have been played once again by a Hispanic actor, or perhaps this time by an Indian actor? Yes absolutely, and I’m guessing that there are quite a few out there who would have killed for the part. Should he have been? Maybe, if nothing else for the sake of creating some admittedly much-needed diversity in major Hollywood roles. But I don’t think the role itself required it in this case, and I think that Cumberbatch did a damn fine job playing the part.

Just because something is problematic doesn’t mean that it’s not good, or that you can’t enjoy it. It just means that we should talk about it, and I’m very happy to see all of my fellow tumblr fans doing so. I hope I added something to the discussion and this wasn’t a meaningless ramble. At the very least it helped me get all of my ideas out of my head, and I can go back to watching the movie over and over again in relative peace :-).
